Calder

Calder realized it was not a good sign when Lord Queshire called his guards aside and had a private word with them. Sure enough, when they walked him back to the dungeon, they continued right on past his cell.

Instead, they brought him to a cave-like room that held instruments of torture along its walls. A small cage in the center looked like a place where someone might put a dog, if they were a terrible person.

No question, Lord Queshire was a terrible person. Calder’s heart sank as Toothless opened the door to the cage. “Get in there,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s quite large enough for me,” Calder said. “I’ll go back to the other cell. I don’t have any complaints, it’s just fine.”

Red leaned against a table nearby, fiddling with a device that looked like it could be used to extract teeth. “Sure, don’t get in,” he said. “There’s lots to play with here.”

Calder, taking the hint as the threat it was meant to be, crawled into the cage. However, he wasn’t done talking. “I don’t understand why I must go here. Lord Queshire won. He should be delighted! I thought he would share his victory cake with me.”

“His lordship don’t like to win that way,” Toothless said.

“What way is that?” Calder said.

“Never you mind.”

“I’ll be happy to play him another match, and then he can win however he likes.”

“Should’a thought a’ that before,” Red told him. “His orders were for us to put you in the cage. No matter what you said.”

“I think he’ll be very unhappy if you—”

Red poked his knife at him through the bars, forcing Calder to squeeze up against the opposite side. “No more jabbering,” he said.

The cage was so small, Calder could only sit with his knees pulled up and his arms wrapped around them. “If I’m going to be here some time, do you think you could bring me another breakfast? I never had the chance to finish the first one.”

“Bugger thinks we’re castle footmen and he’s the lord,” Toothless said.

Red laughed. “No eating or drinking in here. That’s the rule.” He followed Toothless from the room.

Calder lowered his head onto his knees, feeling as miserable as he had when the Sorrenwood constable put him in the stocks. Why were these things always happening to him? He had only wished to help his friends. At least knowing he had friends was of some consolation. Since leaving Fairlace, he had been solitary more often than not.

But Tessa and Ash were not in any position to help him. By now they must be in Fairlace. He hoped that was going well, but he doubted it. If only he’d had time to warn them about Mace’s character. One thing was certain, the man would never voluntarily give up the Gravenwood. Tessa would have to steal it, but if she was caught, who knew what Mace might do to her, even though she was his niece.

They needed his help. First he must get Queshire to tell
