Chapter 15

Boston, MA

THEY SPENT THE next day moving into their new home and setting up their computers in a former bedroom on the second floor that had been converted into a cozy office for the two of them. That evening, they had dinner as usual with their grandmother. The three of them were sitting in her library, each sipping a glass of Port when she said, “This house is going to be kind of empty and lonely without the two of you around.”

“We’ve been talking about that,” Henry said.

“Have you?” she said.

“Yes, Ma’am,” William said. “How would you feel about knocking out a small portion of the party wall and creating a doorway between the two townhouses?”

“Where would you put it?” she said.

“What about somewhere on the second floor, away from the more private areas of each house?” Henry said.

“Right,” William said, “We could create an arched opening near the head of the stairs on each side of the party wall. It could stay open most of the time, but could be closed and secured as needed.”

“That’s not a bad idea,” Henry said, “There’s a small sitting room in that location on both sides of the wall. An arch would open the space up almost as though it was one room.”

“If you boys really want to do that, it’s fine with me,” Grandmother Lane said. “By the way, which bedroom are you going to use? You do realize that both Mary and Elizabeth will expect to hear about the relative merits of each bedroom from each of you?”

“We’ll probably use one for a while and then the other, so they’ll both appear to be well used,” William said.

“Sooner or later, the family will have to know what we’re about, but there are too many other more important things to be dealt with in the meantime,” Henry said.

“You ought to consider changing the locks,” she said. “To save feelings, you can easily explain that too many workmen have been coming and going and have had keys from time to time.”

“Good thinking,” Henry said. “We also need to get the alarm system upgraded and see if yours needs to be upgraded as well.”

“You will dine with an old lady from time to time in the evening, won’t you?” she said.

“Certainly,” William said, “and when Mrs. Carruthers is off duty, we’ll cook for you.”

“Can either of you cook?” she said.

“Actually, we can,” Henry said. “Nothing fancy, just basic things, but now that we’re out of school, we’ll have the time to acquire more skills in that area.”

“I had no idea,” she said.

“It was a simple case of necessity being the mother of invention,” Henry said. “We spent a lot of time studying, and it was so much easier to learn to fix simple meals in our apartment than it was to waste a lot of time eating out.”

“By the way, Grandmother,” Henry said, “thank you for not letting our mothers know that we’d already told you about the events in South Carolina.”

“Right,” William said, “if they knew that we’d told you and not them, it might have gotten ugly.
