CHAPTER TWENTY

Willie watched as Tony lit his pipe and filled his lungs with smoke. Tony held his breath for a second and exhaled as he leaned back against the ATV parked in the high, thick grass.

“Damn, that’s good,” Tony said. “I feel like I’m ridin’ a train.” His hands were shaking, and he cocked one ear to the tree line.“You hear that, man?”

“Stop trippin’,” Willie said. “You know you hear crazy shit when you get high. Help me bag this stuff and don’t take none of it. I need to get some other stuff from the trailer and wake up Pete.”

Willie and Tony regularly cooked up small meth batches in the trailer by using items they stole from the local Walmart. It was enough to make some quick cash selling it Friday and Saturday nights at a local club.

The trailer stank of heavy chemicals and rotten trash. One hot spark or a dropped match on the tax files that were scattered on the floor would blow up or burn down the place in minutes.

It was CJ’s trailer but after Willie and Tony had introduced CJ to meth with a free hit, it was easy for them to take over the double-wide. The more meth CJ wanted, the more desperate he became to find a way to pay for it. Half out of his mind one day as he fought withdrawal, he’d gone to Malley begging for money. Malley, drunk and angry, ranted about Bertrand Lewis stiffing him on the one hundred twenty thousand. That’s when CJ made Bertrand a target.

Willie and Tony were lookouts on the three break-ins as CJ tossed files and laptops out the back door of each office and into a van he had stolen from Leslie. After breaking into the third office, Willie and Tony took a handful of papers with names, social security numbers, and dates of birth then disappeared for awhile.

CJ, however, didn’t know what to do even after his brother, Ronnie, had coached him on how to get credit cards and fraudulent tax refunds. CJ just wanted cash. So Ronnie gave him a couple thousand for the files and the master client list.

While Willie and Tony were hiding out, CJ and more of his drug buddies found another meth dealer in the city and smoked their way through the entire two grand within a week. When the drugs were gone and CJ had come down from his high, he wanted to do it all over again. But he was broke and knew better than to ask Malley. So he went back to the well--Bertrand Lewis--with the intent of getting money regardless of how he had to do it. He found Bertrand, and the encounter put CJ behind bars and Bertrand in a hospital bed.

Willie and Tony waited several weeks after CJ was arrested before they returned to the trailer. So far, it was business as usual. They even let one of their club customers, Pete, use it to sleep off his highs as long as he kept being a customer.
