I met Blaze in the front of the courthouse right at two forty-five. My pops was pulling up behind me, and it didn’t surprise me that the fuckin’ news reporters were out here already. I looked over at Nuri as I parked the car and gripped her chin.

“This is why I didn’t want you to come. You’re not used to this shit, and I don’t want to make you uncomfortable with this bullshit.”

“I’m fine. Let’s go.” She gave me that soft smile of hers and I almost said fuck that judge and what he had to say. Getting out of the car, I rounded my truck as reporters bombarded me.

“Anthem, have they found Zahra’s body yet?”

“Anthem, do you know who’s trying to set you up?”

“Did you kill those other two girls, too?”

They were blurting out question after question as my pops security escorted us inside the courtroom. Blaze went to the counter to let them know we were here. I hope this muthafucka didn’t keep us waiting long, because this was the last place I wanted to be when I had shit I needed to do.

“She said it’ll only be a few minutes,” he relayed when he joined us on the benches.

“Nice to see you again. Nuri.” My pops spoke to Nuri once he was settled.

“It’s nice to see you too, Mr. Reed.”

“Call me, Andrew.”

“Mr. Reed. Judge Daily will see you now,” a slim, thick woman came and delivered the message. She was fine as hell and looked real fuckable, yet I didn’t have the urge to bend her over. I stood up from the bench and held my hand out for Nuri. Walking hand in hand behind security, with the other two behind us. Once in the chambers, we took our seats while we waited for the judge to appear. I heard a side door open and entered an old black man that looked to be about my pop’s age.

“Good afternoon everyone. Mr. Reed, I called you in here today because I came across some very interesting news in your pending case.” He looked at me as if he wanted me to respond to what he just said, but I remained silent. Clearing his throat, he continued. “It has come to my attention the witnesses that the state had, meaning past tense, are no longer alive.”

Blaze cut him off. “What does that have to do with my client?”

“Well, Mr. Reed. It isn’t a coincidence that his ex is presumed dead,” I cut him off.

“That’s not my ex.”

He gave me a look before continuing. “Watch your outbursts, Mr. Reed. Like I was saying. It’s not a coincidence that those young ladies were killed. What I want to know is how did you know they were the witnesses? If you cooperate, the state is willing to offer a plea deal of twenty years instead of life.” I had to shake my head because it was no way in hell that I was signing my life over for some bullshit. He acted as if he had just said twenty minutes.
