13

Jerry started dragging me, then suddenly stopped.

It was Martha and Armand, standing in the middle of the alley! Martha trotted forward and let out a big moo.

“What's going on here?” Armand demanded, shoving back his stringy black hair.

Jerry let go of me, and I scrambled over to Armand. “He was going to kill me,” I explained.

Armand rolled his eyes. “You Curdles, you never can mind your own business, can you?”

“I wasn't doing anything! I was just joking, wasn't I, Billy — wasn't I?” He seemed really scared all of a sudden.

Martha trotted forward a few more steps until she was standing right in front of him. “Moooooooo!”

“Call your cow off, Billy, call her off!” Jerry pleaded.

“You just get on out of here!” Armand shouted. “You just get on out of here and leave Billy alone, you punk!”

Martha took a half step forward. Jerry ran away as fast as he could

“Hey, thanks, man,” I said. “You too, Martha.”

But what was Martha doing in town? Shouldn't she be on a leash or something? “Armand, what are you guys doing here?” I asked.

Armand looked at Martha and then back at me. “Oh, we were just passing by,” he said. was Jerry so afraid of Martha?”

“You ask a lot of questions, guy,” he said. “I guess you never heard of the great stampede of '89.”

I shook my head.

“Jerry's folks got trampled in that dairy disaster,” he explained. “Three whole herds took part in the ruckus, but the Curdles tried to pin the whole thing on Martha.”

“Martha killed Jerrys parents?”

“Heck, no!” Armand exploded. “Why, if you believe that, you might as well —”

Martha interrupted him. “Moooo.”

“Oh, never mind, just get out of here,” Armand said. “And watch out for that Curdle — he's out to get you.”

I nodded and turned to go.

Crossing Main Street, on the way to the Moo 'n' Doo, I heard an engine racing down the street. I turned just in time to see a car hurtling toward me!
