The Conversations Ahead

David Whyte’s range of conversations has three markers: our self, our beloved, and the world. In the coming chapters, we’ll walk through a finer set of distinctions, an entire spectrum of conversation sizes, from introspection to crowd control, and everything in-between.

Being able to navigate this range of conversations increases the flexibility and adaptability of our lives—the ability to thrive in any situation.

Small conversations can be nimble and fast—so fast that they can be hard to hold on to. But not giving them the time they deserve can lead to them negatively affecting other areas of your life.

Bigger conversations are like big objects: they take energy to hold and move. A battleship takes more time and energy to steer than a small sailboat does, and shifts in a longer arc.

It can take months and years to shift the cadence or power structures of a very large conversation like a community or a company. The right mindsets and tools are like leverage, making the effort more focused and effective.

Conversational range is essential if you want to lead transformational change, either at work or at home; it’s also a key to being a whole person. As Kipling suggests, we should be able to “talk with crowds and keep your virtue/Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch.”
