CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“It’s half-past ten and still no sign of him.” Mina sat on the sofa, spreading her supplies out on the coffee table. Two mean-looking guns, empty clips, and an ammunition can filled with her special bullets were all arranged in front of her as loaded the empty clips. “No calls. No texts. That means one of two things.”

“Okay.” Jillian folded her arms. “What do you think happened.”

“If the council sent the reapers after him, that means he’ll be cooling his heels in a cell under the palace.”

“What palace?” Finn’s eyes widened. “As in Buckingham Palace?”

“No.” Mina pushed the full clip into the grip of her first gun, pulled the slide back to put one bullet in the chamber. “The Grey Faith opened Hargrave Asylum under the guise of being a mental institution, but it was always a prison for supernatural creatures that became too great of a danger to roam free.”

“And it’s still operating?” Conner folded his arms. “I thought all those places got shut down.”

“When The Grey Faith dissolved after the Rift War, it was abandoned.” Mina removed the clip again and replaced the missing round that was in the chamber of her pistol. “What was left of the Bardic Coven took up residence there in the mid-1920s. They restored it and employed a powerful witch to cast an illusion spell so that it still looks abandoned from the outside. But to those of us who know better, Hargrave is referred to as the palace.”

“Kind of like what you guys did with this place.” Conner nodded.

“Exactly like we did with this place.” Mina put the safety on, standing up to holster her first weapon. “If he’s there, our only chance is a good old-fashioned prison-break.”

“What’s the other possibility?” Finn sat down next to Mina as she loaded the second clip.

“The second possibility is that the chamberlin didn’t tell the Bardic Council about us stealing the relic.” Mina smiled. “If the council doesn’t know, then the only other person he would have told was his husband, Neil.”

“And I imagine that Neil isn’t going to be thrilled about what happened to the chamberlin.” Conner sighed. “Do you think that’s why he took Eden?”

“I don’t think so.” Mina shook her head. “If I had to guess, I’d say Neil was in the process of subduing Eden while the chamberlin came after us. It would have been the only way to make sure that no matter which one of us had the relic, it would have ended up in their possession.”

“So, where do we find Neil?” Jillian stood tall. “Do I get a gun?”

“If Neil took Eden, he’ll be holding him at Arkwright.” Mina holstered her other weapon. “It was part of the underground railway. It shut down in the seventies, and the tunnels were blocked off. The vampires adopted it as a social hub. It’s basically a club. They buy potions from a London coven of witches. I guess the stuff is able to make vampires feel drunk.”

“That’s awesome.” Conner clapped his hands and then rubbed them together.
