TWENTY-FIVE

There had to be a way to use Connors to get inside that base.

That was the smart move.

The problem was he couldn’t trust the man to carry it through; he was a coward, and the moment he was inside he’d try to would use the drugs to broker a better deal with this Boss to get his ass out of Freetown and as far away from him as possible. Danjuma knew it. He knew people.

The only answer was sending someone in there with him; someone that Boss and his men wouldn’t suspect, someone who would be able to get done whatever needed to be done and look after himself.

There was only one person he could think of.

He’d left Rakeem with instructions to get the American cleaned up and given something to eat and drink, but not let him out of his sight.

Then he arranged for a couple of men to head up to the old army base and keep an eye on the place from a safe distance, but not to be seen. If anyone came out of there, he wanted to know about it.

Now he sat in his car, his fingers drumming on the steering wheel.

He needed to make a call, and he needed to do it right.

It was answered on the second ring.

“Hey babe,” Dominique said. “What’s up? I wasn’t expecting to hear from you until later.”

“Ah well, somethings come up and I need a favor.”

“Anything, you know that,” she said.

“Probably better if I tell you in person,” he said.

“You know I won’t say no to you,” There was a laugh in her voice, but he still wasn’t sure about asking for her help.

“It’s not that,” he said. “Honestly, it’ll be easier for you to say no if we are face to face.”

“No hints?”

“I’d rather wait,” he said.

“Well, okay, it all sounds very mysterious though,” she laughed. “I’m out at the moment but I can be at the apartment in about twenty minutes if that works for you? But I won’t be able to stay.”

“I won’t need long.”

“I’ll see you in twenty minutes.”

He hung up.

He hated having to ask her, and wouldn’t blame her if she said no.

It was his daughter who was in trouble, not hers, and she would be the one risking her life to bring Lori home. If she said yes.

He turned on the engine, glanced in the mirrors and pulled away from the side of the road.

It would only take him ten minutes to get to the apartment.

Months ago, he had given her a key to the place, but she had never used it. She always waited for him to arrive first. There was still a distance between them, a barrier that kept his life with her separate from his daughters. Things were going to change now, though. They would have to if he was going to see Lori again.

Dominique arrived a few minutes after him.

“It’s my daughter,” he said, as he closed the door behind them. “She’s been kidnapped.” And then it all came out.
