“It’s time, isn’t it?” Maybelle asked when Kobo and I stepped inside the house.

“Time? For?” I was confused as to what she was talking about.

“For you to go back. It’s time, right?” How she knew that was beyond me. Although she seemed to know what I was thinking, she didn’t appear upset.

“Uhm…yes, I believe it is.” I looked away from her to Kobo as if he would give me some sort of strength. I didn’t want to upset Maybelle or make her feel like she was being abandoned. Although the woman was barely around. It was strange how she insisted everything I learned must be done independently.

It's a witch’s right of passage. It shows how serious you are about becoming your greatest self, she said.

Regardless, she was still family. I didn’t want to leave her alone.

“It’s alright, NaKiyah. Don’t feel bad, sweetheart. I knew from the beginning that this was only temporary. So, it’s okay. This isn’t goodbye for us, just a see you later. The only thing I fear is your safety. You know how dangerous it has gotten out here.” She patted the chair beside her.

I went over and sat down. “I’ll be careful. I’ll stick to the forest as you’ve told me.”

Maybelle’s head shook. “The woods aren’t safe either. I’ve heard talk that several bodies have been found out there. Maybe you should wait awhile before leaving.”

My mind was made already. I was going back to Surian at first light. I couldn’t wait any longer. “I’ll be alright, Maybelle. I’ve learned how to protect myself with magic. I swear, I’ll be fine.”

Maybelle’s head shook as she stood from her chair. “Having the knowledge to protect yourself and doing it is entirely different. You have never been in a dangerous situation—”

“I know that. You need to have faith in me. Trust in my abilities and know that I’ll be alright. Auntie, I can’t wait for the danger to pass. That’ll be impossible to do.” We were witches that the world hated. There was nowhere safe for us. I kept that thought to myself, not wanting to add to her worry. “There’s always going to be danger lurking. Our world is dangerous.” I explained and hoped that she understood where I was coming from.

Maybelle stared at me for a long minute. Her expression didn’t give away her thoughts or how she was feeling. After a while, she sighed. “It really is time. You’re ready.” She looked across the room to the chest of books. “Here, you must take these with you. There’s still so much that you need to learn.” She exclaimed while dragging the chest of books over to me.

I stared at her in disbelief. She couldn’t possibly want me to haul all those books along. “I cannot carry all of those. That will slow me down, and what if someone comes after me? I’ll lose them.”

“You must take them. I won’t let you leave here without a single book.” She fussed at me.

I found her concern heartwarming and a bit funny.
