Chapter Sixteen

The sun had begun setting by the time we finished playing around. I wasn’t complaining because it was exactly what I needed. My body wasn’t as tense and overwhelmed as it had been. Still, I wasn’t rushing to return to the palace either.

I felt Kobo knew because he hadn’t said anything about us heading back. Instead, he went hunting, finding a nice size deer for me to prepare.

It felt like old times with us. The only difference was that Kobo had evolved.

“What are you thinking so hard about?” Kobo’s arm came around my shoulders, bringing me into his warmth.

I smiled while laying my head against his bare chest. “Us, actually. Thinking about how things used to be, like this. When I wasn’t this powerful being, and you were just an incredible wolf. Not this creature who seems to be dying every other day.”

Kobo took hold of my chin and pushed my head up so that I was staring at him. “You’ve always been powerful, NaKiyah. Besides, I was always something otherworldly. You’ve been telling me that from the moment we met. So, how I see it—with me dying and all—we are exactly who and where we’re meant to be, plus more. In truth, I’m not complaining about my turnout.” He glanced down at himself. “Well, I would have preferred a different host. Still, I’m grateful no less.”

Laughing, I kissed his chest before our eyes locked. “I like the body and man you’re in. I’m glad you’re grateful, no less.” I couldn’t stop myself from smiling. “I never knew how bad I wanted this for you until it happened.”

Kobo chuckled while cupping the side of my face. “This was all I ever wanted, to be with you.” His eyes dropped to my smiling lips, and his thumb rubbed along my cheek. “Now that I have this permanent form, I can be with you…” leaning down, he kissed me. “As well as do other things I’ve been dying to do…” he kissed me again.

Laughing, my arms went around his neck. “Other things such as?” Kobo rolled me onto my back, causing a giggle to leave my mouth.

Kobo’s light laughter faded as he became serious. “Everything.”

Taking hold of his face, my thumbs stroked along his cheeks before coming to his full lips. “Then you shall do everything you wish with me…” I kissed him as his body pushed into mine.

He took hold of my wrist and pinned them above my head as his free hand slid under my gown. Breaking the kiss, Kobo’s forehead lay against mine as we panted heavily. A growl soon left his mouth, and he was away from me.

“Kobo—”

“Don’t.” He sneered as his hand came out, halting me in my tracks. Once again, he growled. Turning away from me, I noticed his breathing becoming erratic.

“What’s happening, Kobo?” I moved closer to him.

Kobo’s head shook as his body pressed against a tree. “I don’t know.” When I moved closer, his head snapped up, and I froze. He stared at me with those bright gold eyes and elongated canines.
