“Today’s block party is going to be big,” Dad says. “We’re fundraising for the brand-new Golden Trails Elementary School playground. And with Dylan gone to look at apartments, Nat, I’m counting on you to be the best baking helper this town has ever seen. And if you’re really nice, maybe you’ll get some extra dessert after. I have a new batch of peanut butter cookies that I’m going to try out for the first time today.”

“You got it, Captain Dad,” I say. With the whole day’s events ahead of me, I’m hoping I can squeeze a game or two of Alienlord in before Lucy joins us and we leave, so I eat superfast.

I manage to make it through breakfast and even feel a little more awake after eating something. Although it’s sunny out, it’s still a little chilly, so I opt for a thin cashmere sweater under my white vest and blue jeans with fuzzy socks to keep my feet warm. I also redo my hair so that it looks slightly more presentable and put on some lip gloss and mascara. I’m not really into makeup like Mel probably is, but I think lip gloss is fun. I like playing around with the colors—and after all, isn’t having fun what makeup is for?

I’m just about done with some glittery eyeshadow and ready for Alienlord when I hear the door open downstairs.

“Nat!” My mom calls out. “Lucy’s here!”

Darn. There goes Alienlord. Celia and Jess are meeting up with us at the block party, but since Lucy is so close, we’re going together. I stash my controller underneath my pillow just in case Lucy comes up to my room. When Celia and Jess come over unannounced, I can usually hide my stuff in plain sight, but since Lucy knows more about the gaming world, she’d likely discover my secret much easier.

I take one last look in the mirror and grab my canvas bag from my bedpost, skipping down the stairs while swinging it over my shoulder. Lucy’s waiting at the bottom. I see that her hair is in two neat, pleated braids that are twisted together behind her head in a complicated bun, which I notice when she turns around. I must admit it: it looks awesome.

“That is the coolest hairstyle I’ve ever seen,” I say as I take in the rest of her outfit: a blue blazer over a white V-neck shirt and dark jeans with a yellow belt. She looks cool and awesome and I . . . definitely look like I’m on my way to the library. Maybe my mom was right to ask me to invite her to Mel’s party. If Mel saw her right now, she’d fit right into the cool-girl vibe.

“Oh, thanks!” Lucy looks pleased with my compliment. “I saw this in an old sci-fi movie, and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. I asked my mom to figure out how to do it and watched an online tutorial and everything.”

Hmm. I know it’s just a hair tutorial, but that gets me thinking.
