CHAPTER 27 - INTERLUDES

Despite its poorly-planned streets, Birin had been relatively easy to navigate over the past two weeks. Runah had gone to the east side of the city with the monk Nidian to seek out seamstresses, while Marn and Guarin had gone to speak to the monks of Nifara. There was no urgency this day. The money from her father would last some time yet. But there was still a desire to find work—to find a means to settling in. Hanen had mentioned it was even warmer down south, and the idea of heat that would wilt her hair in the summer, and require cotton or wool to soak up sweat did not fill her with excitement, although the exotic fabrics and accessories, which were more readily available and affordable there, did sound intriguing.

Alodda came to a long building, the upper level of which had finely colored drapes between the pillars. A woman stood behind a counter on this floor, counting bolts of cloth and only giving Alodda a momentary glance.

Alodda waited.

The woman made a mark in her ledger and then finally focused her attention on her.

“May I help you?”

“Yes, you might,” Alodda replied. “I’m a seamstress who specializes in fine embroidery—trained in Mahn Fulhar and a member of the guild there.”

“We have no work here.”

“Yes, well, I’m not looking for work, per se. But perhaps you might know of a lady in the city looking for help.”

“Have you been to the Templum?” the woman asked. “They provide for the needs of the less fortunate.” She eyed Alodda and her northern clothes.

“Perhaps you’ve a mistress I may speak with?”

The woman scoffed. “Lady Emaine is away. She’ll return in an hour.”

“And may I look around?”

“So long as you don’t make more work for me.

“That is never my intention for anyone.”

The woman went back to her work, and Alodda walked into a room crowded with tables boasting messy but beautiful arrays of cloth and bolts and ribbons, filling her with awe. That a place like this existed, that there could be this much unused cloth just awaiting the touch of a seamstress! She made her way as a lone observer through aisles so busy with haphazard materials that the woman’s admonition to Alodda made no sense. An out-of-place bolt would not have gone amiss here. But as her surprise wore off, she started to notice a pattern to the mess. Most tables displayed a single material, and generally the colors were grouped together, as though the mistress of the warehouse took pleasure in allowing her customers to hunt for hidden treasures.

After an hour Alodda found herself at a table of soft wool, dyed every shade of purple. The light wool was noted for being from the hrelgren empire, made of Drul wool. Her mind wandered as she took up a bolt of black wool dyed a deep purple.

“Considering the wool for a shawl?” a woman said, approaching from the back of the room. She wore a rich blue robe, and her long black hair hung freely behind her.
