MAGNUS

THE JUNGLE

DOCTOR

CHAPTER ONE

Magnus Decides to become a Doctor

Magnus was a baby elephant. From the first moment he was born into the world, he greeted it with a happy mini bellowing ‘Hello’ and a triumphant twirl of his squiggly trunk. Unlike the other new calves, he did not wait for his mother to lead him gently into the surprise of cool water, or for the customary nudge of her trunk. Instead he waddled happily into a large pool without a pause, filling his short trunk with the clear liquid and attempting to squirt it out with tiny splutters of delight.

His mother and father were surprised to see him so adventurous so soon. Despite his small chubby body he seemed to try to do anything the grown-ups did. Watching him waddle off after his larger brother one day, his father came to a decision. ‘We must call him Magnus,’ he trumpeted, as elephants do. ‘He tries to do everything in a big way.’ Mother Elephant, having agreed that Magnus was a very appropriate name for her adventurous little baby, was well pleased.

As the summer days passed slowly by, the herd lazed contentedly beside their favourite water hole, basking in the sunshine and occasionally using their trunks to give themselves a gentle shower.

One day Magnus was watching the elders with interest. He noticed they could not roll themselves over in the mud to clean their hides and seemed too feeble to keep getting up to plunge into the water. So he dipped his growing trunk into the water, drew up as much of the liquid as he could manage and sent cascades over them as they lay nearby.

‘Thank you little Magnus,’ chorused the old elephants. ‘You are making us feel so much better.’

‘I like making others feel better,’ mused Magnus and that night at bedtime he told his parents that when he grew up, he would be a doctor. ‘Not just for elephants, you understand,’ he said earnestly, ‘but for every creature in the jungle.’ Mother and Father just smiled. The months passed by and Magnus grew and grew. So did his trunk, until he could curl it around quite firmly. Now he used it to pick up fallen trees blocking the trail, as the herd journeyed from place to place.

One day, on a long dusty trek, Magnus appointed himself protector of the old animals who lingered behind the main herd. His father smiled as he turned to watch his small son try to encourage the elders as they lumbered slowly along. He was only half their size, but he weaved in and out amongst them, keeping up their spirits with his merry chattering. Sometimes he would burst through the undergrowth, to make a shorter path for them. Often too, he would dig deep into the earth with his handsome tusks and effortlessly pick out sweet potatoes to keep up their energy.
