RAISING THE BISHOP’S CHILDREN

I have always had a thirst for knowledge. I just like finding out things. A running joke in my family is that wherever a course is being taught, there I will be. This is the reason they call me a “coursite”.

I think the reason I like to take courses is because I believe that we should always maintain a healthy curiosity and gain knowledge about life for ourselves and to share with others. Without knowledge, how will we grow as individuals and communities? The Bible says that “my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). Well, I’ve seen this for myself in my work and in the lives of people around me.

I saw it in my home village of Numan, where young girls died in backstreet abortion clinics at the hands of butchers.

I saw it in seminary, where people did not respect the knowledge they were being given and subsequently made bad decisions.

I saw it in the villages and cities where we were posted. People were fed the wrong information and indoctrinated with the wrong type of knowledge, which led to the killing of innocent people.

But I have also seen the power of knowledge – what it can do and how it can bring change. This kind of knowledge is preached in Christ-centred churches all over the world. It empowers, never imprisons, and always seeks to bring spiritual and consequently external transformation in the lives of individuals and those around them. That is the power of the gospel. That is the power that I long for and seek when I take these courses in my quest as a “coursite”.

My husband and children know when I have been touched by a course because I come back with my brain on fire, a stupid grin on my face and my eyes all lit up like firecrackers. When this happens, they roll their eyes and think, “Here we go again. What is she going to do now?”

But I don’t just love learning. I also love being a wife and mother. When I think of where I have come from, I am so thankful to God for doing far above anything I could ever ask or even think of receiving from him. After all, I had never ever expected to be married at all, let alone to be married for thirty years to a man like Ben, a man with a heart that burns with passion for God and people – and has the ability to make me laugh!

When Ben and I had children, we were deeply concerned about the so-called curse of pastors’ children. Okay, fine. There isn’t a curse per se. More a so-called inevitability about pastors’ children abandoning the faith they grew up with. I was determined that my children would not fall into that category. I was going to raise godly children who would serve God and be of use to him and the people around them.

Schooling the Children

I was also inspired by a Scottish missionary, Shina Harris, who was a member of our church in Zaria.
