CHAPTER TEN

“I didn’t expect anyone to be alive.” Fawn choked on the arid, bitter air. She was shaken.

She was facedown, in a fetal position. The shouts plugged her back in to the current situation. Her ears rang as she rose to her knees. With determination, she held onto the sorting machinery to keep from sliding back down to the dusty floor. If she let her adrenaline take control, she’d make a bad decision.

It felt like forever, but only a few minutes had passed.

Damoni had picked this discreet location to her advantage.

So had Neese and Daniel Tom.

Advantage.

Neese and Daniel staggered into the center, where Damoni lay sprawled, her hands mangled and bloodied. Despite this she got to her feet with a cold sneer of defiance.

“Better make your peace with the creator,” Damoni said.

“Don’t be mad you got caught,” Neese grabbed her wrists and placed blockers on both her wrists. She didn’t wince at his rough handling of her injured hands and wrists, but she stared stoically ahead at the exit.

“Are you happy now?” Damoni shouted, breaking her somber expression. “You ought to be deleted!”

Neese lacked empathy. His rough manner caused an exchange of looks from some of the other regulators. Fawn understood the constant scrutiny regulators received from the public. Neese didn’t care. He’d check every horrible regulator stereotype box on the list.

On purpose.

“It’s done.” Daniel raised his protective googles as he made his way to Damoni.

Neese didn’t move.

The other regulators looked everywhere but at the two inspectors. They knew it was bad.

“Enough,” Daniel softly placed himself between Neese and Damoni. “Come on, Moni.”

“You don’t call me that. Not anymore.” Damoni cut her eyes to Daniel.

He checked her hands before guiding her out with the others of her band remaining. Neese gathered the additional regulators. Fawn struggled to stand.

“What the hell, Neese?”

Neese ignored her. They marched outside the abandoned warehouse to find Puco had relocated the cargo craft to their location.

Damoni and her cohorts punched and kicked in attempts to flee and escape.

Fawn walked out last. Blue and red lights doused them as they made their way from the warehouse. The patrol lights painted everything in the area. Responding regulators reinforced the beam.

Medics arrived and hurried inside to the injured regulator and hurt members of Damoni’s crew. Her people all wore reg uniforms.

How did she secure those?

First, how did Damoni get the informant list and now the uniforms? No doubt Damoni was resourceful, but it bothered Fawn.

Why is Neese so eager to incite her to anger?

Did he mean to provoke Damoni so he could kill her? He had a wild look in his eyes before he threw the flash-bang.

He wouldn’t be the first to commit a death violation under the guise of upholding regulations.

“Ma’am? Are you alright?” A medic shook her arm. “Inspector?”

Fawn blinked. The medic’s smooth, dark face held concern. Deep hazel eyes met Fawn’s. Her stomach flopped and her ears burned. The medic’s name badge read “Torey.”

“You’re bleeding.” Torey’s fingertips brushed the scratches on Fawn’s forearms. “Let’s get these bandaged up.
