CHAPTER FIVE

Zelle

Ten Days Until Christmas…

I wasn’t expecting anything from this man. Like, where did he even come from? One night I’m arguing and fighting with a rude customer. The next day his brother is at my door, then inside my apartment, giving me my life back. Four days later, I wake up in a damn mansion. Not only that, but a partnership in his mother’s business. My life had gotten upgraded just that quick—unexpectedly! All I asked for was a new job. God blessed me with a new business, house, and a man that was from planet alien. Because, what the hell?! I needed a pinch or for someone to wake me up from the dream I was having. This couldn’t be my life. While it felt good, I couldn’t help but question it all. There had to be a catch.

I was just manifesting a big house for me, Rique, and Raya a couple of days ago. Now I had one. I wasn’t trying to complain about it or deny the blessing. I just wanted to understand it. I’d never had this type of attention from a man. Even though I kept my flings at arm’s length, none of them tried to do nice gestures for me. I was okay with that because I didn’t want anything but dick from them.

“We’re ready to go, sissy!” Raya yelled from wherever she was in the house.

Before I could get on her about using her inside voice, I heard Rique getting on her. I smiled at him being gentle about it. There was a time where he was a little aggressive with her. That derived from me being that way with them. When they told me how they felt, I fixed my attitude and was gentler. I only enforced a harsh tone when they were way out of line. Rique had picked up on my niceties and applied them for himself.

“Okay, I’ll be right there,” I called over my shoulder. Since they hadn’t come into the kitchen, I figured they were waiting at the entrance for me. “Y’all go get in the car and wait for me.”

“Zelle!” Rique came rushing into the kitchen out of breath.

“Why are you yelling and running through the house?” I placed my hands on my hips. I made a mental note to have a family meeting with my siblings.

I wanted to lay down the rules again. Just because we lived in a new house and a new neighborhood didn’t mean that things had completely changed. They still had to follow the rules we had when we were living in The Heights. Rique and Raya would surely have chores. We were still going to get up early every other Saturday morning and deep clean the house. There would be no yelling, cursing, fighting, or talking back—just like before. Our life may have been upgraded, but that’s where the change ended. We were still humble, appreciative, and respectful.

“I’m sorry, sis. I was wondering where the car was. All I see out in the driveway is a white with black trim Audi sports car and an all-black Mercedes G-wagon.
