Leo was framed in one tiny diamond pane of the parlor window as he disappeared over the berm. A little piece of April went with him.

She laced her fingers together, trying to remember the feel of her hand in his as they tiptoed together through Derring Hall. There had been so much laughter in their eyes as they’d crouched beside tables and hid behind doors.

She imagined herself awaiting his touch in the bath… all his torturously drawn-out ministrations. Her heart kicked as she remembered the tackling and the splashing. She could still feel his breath on her ear. His chest hair between her fingers. His cock, buried inside her…

But it was still her hand in his that came easiest. Memories of being led down rabbit-holes of youth and misadventure.

Her fingers threaded together more tightly and she closed her eyes to savor it.

“The neighbors now, April? Truly?”

April startled, whipping around to find Agatha, cross-armed in the parlor doorway.

“Ah, my favorite sister. Ever watchful of others. Ever unaware of herself.”

Agatha strode in and poked at some chapbooks on the nearest table, feigning she had any purpose there other than to be a bother.

“You do not wish to scare off Mr. Gramble, do you?” she asked.

“I believe it is you who should be the more concerned. For upon my union with him hinges all the pretty dresses you will ever wear in the future. All the ponies your buggy will ever be drawn by. All the suitors who will demand a dowry the price of a country to take on the burden of your character.”

Agatha smiled, seemingly hearing only the truth of the correction and dismissing its insult. And why should she not be happy? When April’s suffering would bring heroic amounts of coin to their coffer.

“See that you do not allow our futures to slip through that gap of yours, dear sister.” She flicked her tongue at her own front teeth before recovering a smug smile.

With that, she slithered off. April shut the door behind her and sank against it.

“The best day of my life,” she whispered, to none but herself.

That was what he’d said. But how could that be when he had traveled to faraway lands and been raised on an estate four times the size of her family’s own? In fact, several generations back, the Nightingale parcel had belonged to the Derring line. It was only granted to them as part of a knighthood awarded to April’s great-grandfather.

Perhaps in a different time, in a different place…

She frowned.

She had freely given up that information which was most lackluster about her. She had teased about her ill reputation because a tryst had been her only aim. And how was she to secure it without first expressing a fervent openness to it? For the first time, she worried her impulse had spoiled something. Not by being any worse than previous impulses, but by way of there being something to spoil.

The best day of my life. The more she repeated those words in her mind, the more she felt the statement to be mutual.
