Weißes (Nicht-)Essen im Kongofreistaat und in Deutsch-Ostafrika (1884–1914)

von Diana M. Natermann

,White‘ (Non-)Eating in the Congo Free State and German East Africa (1884–1914)

This article analyses, reconstructs, and presents how food cultures are linked to the establishment and implementation of power within colonies by analysing white habits of not-eating. By juxtaposing white with sub-Saharan cultures, the aim is to show how rejecting indigenous foods represented European political and cultural elitism. Culinary rejection was a means of segregation and vital for (re-)enforcing whiteness amongst Europeans in Africa. The analytical source base consists of ego-documents by Belgians, Germans, and Swedes who while in Africa, practiced a 'civilised' dining culture and turned eating into a status symbol. By combining whiteness studies with food, colonial, and visual history I provide a refined understanding of imperial lives in Africa and its links to post-colonial theories.
