Chapter 15: Back in Hertfordshire

Because the conversation with Col. Fitzwilliam's parents had gone so well, he and Darcy decided to stay for lunch and then head back that afternoon to Netherfield Park. They arrived at Netherfield just before dinner.

As they were taking off their coats, Louisa came in and greeted them. “Colonel, Mr. Darcy, we thought you were not to return until tomorrow. May I assume that you would like to join us for dinner?”

“If it is not too much trouble,” answered Darcy.

“It will be no problem. Let me just go inform cook. I expect dinner may be a little late. I believe my husband and Charles are in the study.”

When Darcy and Col. Fitzwilliam walked in the study, Bingley was at the desk writing something and Hurst was sitting on the couch, a drink in his hand, perusing a newspaper. Bingley looked up. “Darcy, colonel, you are back. I thought you were going to stay overnight and return in the morning. I was just writing you a note to tell you that we had left Netherfield for London, but you were welcome to stay as long as you like. The staff has been paid to work through the month. I wanted to get to London to see my Uncle George.”

Darcy thought that was typical of Bingley. Once he got it in his mind that he wanted to do something, he did it on the spur of the moment, often not considering that there might be things that needed to be done to prepare for it. He probably talked to Jane that morning; decided he was not going to pursue her; and wanted to be off.

“Was there a reason it had to be tomorrow?”

Bingley laughed. “Of course. I want to get started planning my new life and he is the first person with whom I want to talk. You know that once I finally decide I want to do something, I want to do it right away. I am not good at waiting.”

He then turned to Col. Fitzwilliam. “Colonel, the field is yours. I explained my situation to Miss Bennet and we decided that the time was not right for us. She is a wonderful woman and I regret leaving the field. However, I may want to talk with her again in the near future if you tell me that you have been convinced to leave the field also.”

“No, Bingley I am not, as you say, leaving the field. I have just entered the field with the intent of winning, anticipating a victory that I will relish the rest of my life.”

Bingley gave him a rueful smile. “I rather expected that and I wish you happiness. I think that both of you deserve it.”

Col. Fitzwilliam stuck out his hand. “Thank you, Bingley. You are a good man and I hope you find whatever it is that you wish to find. I believe that I have.”

At that moment Georgiana burst into the room. “Will, you are back. I have something awful to tell you.
