The area around Mount Vernon includes many sites that can still be seen today, including Abingdon, Pohick Church, Hayfield, Colchester, Rippon Lodge and Gunston Hall. George Washington Bicentennial, Vol. 1.

Although Mount Vernon was a huge estate in a rural area, the Washingtons were part of a larger community in the surrounding area. The port town of Alexandria was only ten miles to the north, and George and Martha Washington often visited for their social, spiritual, political and commercial needs. A number of other sites close to Mount Vernon associated with the general and president can still be found today, and many are open to the public. A sample of these will be the subject of the remainder of this chapter.
