IN THE FOLLOWING WEEK Barbara convinced Selena to venture out for exercise, which brought unexpected meetings on Gay Street with the gentlemen; in addition to their daily morning calls that always lasted a little longer than polite visiting required. The viscount continued to unbend to the point where Barbara declared she saw a glow for Selena in his eyes and she started to be confident of their success. As yet she hadnât persuaded Selena to share her sanguine expectations.
This morning they sauntered along the street, looking in shop windows, hoping to meet the viscount and Edward Westaway as they had, by accident, the previous three mornings. Selena had strolled onwards while Barbara stood in front of a millinerâs shopfront studying the details of a bonnet she hoped to replicate, when the gentlemen stepped up to Barbara and bid her good morning.
Westaway soon asked, âIs Mrs Hartnell not with you today?â He glanced over Barbaraâs shoulder and his face froze. Barbara turned to discover what he had seen. In front of the bookshop a few doors away, Selena wrenched her arm from the grimy hand of the shiny-coated debt collector.
Barbara desperately improvised, hoping to distract Edward from the scene unfolding before them. âWill you assist me in choosing a new bonnet, Mr Westaway?â
Instead of replying, Westaway strode towards Selena, who by now had backed away from the dreadful man and, with a look of horror on her face, was hurrying back to Barbara.
Halfway there, Selena must have noticed Westaway striding towards her. Her face transformed in an instant to her usual calm façade to greet him, but her hands were clasped at her waist in a white-knuckled grip. They spoke for a few moments, with Westaway clearly asking her why she had been troubled by the man and Selena responding with a laugh and a dismissive wave of her hand.
Barbara recollected the viscount standing beside her and found him watching all three of them. What had he discerned from that tableau before him? Had he also seen the debt collector accost Selena?
Barbara met Selenaâs worried look with her own. Was she all right? Did the man hurt her or just threaten her again? Was their whole scheme to find her a wealthy husband sunk by what the gentlemen had just witnessed?
