She was a temptress.
She knew full well what she was doing, and how he would react to it. He kicked the door shut behind them, placing them alone in her bedroom. Which would be entirely scandalous if anyone discovered it, and if her reputation wasnât already sullied by her living situation.
She turned toward him, her hands on her hips, her gaze now traveling as lazily up and down his body as his had on hers in the foyer.
He spread his arms out and turned slowly in a circle. âDo you like what you see?â he asked.
âI do. But you donât need me to tell you how gorgeous you are. Youâve been telling yourself that for years, havenât you?â Her lips curled into a smirk.
âI have, I will admit,â Thomas said, giving her a mocking bow. âBut it is so much better when a lady such as yourself says it.â
âAnd what kind of lady am I?â She spoke in a challenging tone.
âThe kind,â he said, âwho isnât afraid to ask for what she wants.â He gestured to himself as she smiled in response. âThe kind who wants to be useful, who refuses to follow the path set out for her.â His tone softened. âThe kind who rushes to offer help to someone even though most would say he didnât need it.â
âThank you.â She picked up a sheet of paper from her desk, which was to the left of where they stood. Her bed was on his right, while an enormous armoire was in back of her against the third wall.
He had been looking at her too intently to notice much about the room, but now that he had a chance to look around, he could see how she had made it her ownâa collection of Percy Wittlesford books were on a shelf over the desk, their spines well-worn, while a silver brush and comb rested on a tray on top of the desk, as though it served as both workspace and beauty space.
Of course for both of them, their beauty was their work.
âBefore we begin,â he said as the thought struck him, âdo you suppose I could be useful?â
She frowned in confusion. âUseful? How?â
âThatâs just what I mean. You are planning on doing something usefulâI wonder if I could. Besides educate young ladies in the pursuit of pleasure,â he added slyly.
Her cheeks flushed. âIf you could manage to make a living out of that I am certain you would do very well.â
But he didnât want to do any of that with anyone but her.
Not that he could let any of his feelings for her slipâhe couldnât entangle her in his messy emotions, just because theyâd decided to emerge at the worst possible time.
And he couldnât say precisely what they were in the first place. Just that he wished they had more time together, even though having more time together would mean that his family would suffer for longer.
So he couldnât wish for that.
He had to forget all of this, forget how
