CHAPTER 21

WILL’S KIND WORDS STUNG, AND she worked hard not to wince as they taunted her, echoing in the silence. Jen’s attention shifted back to the darkness at her feet.

I’m not the right person to help him, and I’m not the right person for this job, either. That’s why I couldn’t do it. I shouldn’t be here.

This was not the time to wallow in self-pity.

No, I’m the perfect person for this job. I’m a genuine fan of the show, not a weird stalker fan. That’s why he trusts me. I don’t like it, but I have to do it.

A chuckle broke the silence, and her head snapped up at the sound. Beside her, Will stood and brushed himself off, his expression free of whatever had been tormenting him. “I guess ‘lost in thought’ was contagious tonight. Are you okay?”

By the time she’d managed to send the signal to her muscles to stand, he was offering her a hand. Jen studied it momentarily before letting him pull her up. Once again she stared into his eyes, just as she had when he’d helped her out of his car the night before, albeit from several inches lower in her more sensible shoes.

“Thanks,” she said.

“Thank you.”

The ensuing silence crackling with electricity. She was so distracted she didn’t immediately recognize that she hadn’t let go of his hand. Blushing furiously when she did, she was thankful for the darkness of the woods as she turned toward the path to hide her face.

“I’ll get out of everyone’s way here.” She darted away from him as she spoke. “I’ll meet you out there whenever you’re done.”

“Sounds good.” His words followed her as her feet hit the trail.

Dammit.

She’d jogged halfway to the clearing when she passed Rachel and the crew on their way back to Will.

“Is he okay?”

“He seems to be. Or doing better, anyway. He didn’t tell me anything. All I did was sit there.” She needed to get away before Rachel read the truth in her face.

“Thanks for looking out for him. You two make a good team.”

“Uh, thanks. I’ll see you later.” Jen hurried on, eager to get away from what had nearly happened.

Emerging from the trees, she spotted Erica halfway to the parking lot, still with her phone to her ear, and sighed in relief. At least she didn’t have to make small talk for the time being. But her relief didn’t last long because at that moment, Rachel’s mild-mannered assistant caught sight of her and scowled as she spoke into her phone. Her stare reminded Jen of the unsettling way Tom had gaped at her the previous night at dinner. What’s going on?

She glanced around to be sure Erica’s glare wasn’t directed at someone or something else nearby. But no one else was anywhere around or behind her. The other woman ended her call with an abrupt hand gesture and directed her displeasure at her phone as she paced back and forth, typing angrily.

What was that about?

With nothing to do but wait for filming to finish, Jen returned to her spot at the base of the tree.
