The quadratic equation y = ax2 + bx + c is a function. As we showed in Chapter 4, when y = 0, the graph crosses the x-axis. Those x values are the roots (answers or solutions) of a quadratic equation.
Instead of using y, functions are usually indicated by F(x) or f(x), which are interpreted as “function of x,” where x is a variable. Functions (and, of course, variables) can be indicated by any letter, however. The idea is the same.
We actually encountered a function when we graphed the linear equation y = x – 2, which also could have been written as f(x) = x – 2. For a relation to be a function, each value of x, the domain, will give one (and only one) value for y, the range. So for f(x) = x – 2, if x = 1, f(x) = – 2 and cannot also equal another value.
