Something burning? Paper? Had Luke set the building on fire? Orders would pour into the Upper Mill should the Hilliard supply of newsprint be put out of the running. He relaxed. The mill couldn’t burn. Every ceiling was crossed with automatic sprinklers which would drench whatever was below and keep the fire from spreading. Sniffing he followed the scent of burning paper.

“Geoff! Geoff! Hul-lo-a!”

The hollow call rose from the basement. His father’s voice! Why so faint? Was he exhausted from a struggle? Geoffrey plunged down the stairs.
