Dad was sitting at the kitchen table when I entered the house, carrying a take-out bag from Bean There Drank That. Mom was walking in from the living room, carrying an actual, honest-to-goodness newspaper. Yeah. They still make those apparently. She sat down next to my dad at the table, folding the paper out in front of them on the table. I watched them for a moment as they looked at the paper and talked to each other about whatever it was they were examining within.

Not giving myself time to overthink everything, I walked over and set the bag on the table across from them. They both looked up at the same time.

“I’m gay.”

They both just stared at me. I stared back.

“That’s it.” I threw my hands up. “I’m gay. Respond.”

“You owe me fifty bucks.” My dad leaned towards my mother and muttered out of the corner of his mouth.

She nudged him roughly with her elbow.

I frowned at them.

“I’m gay.” I stated again. “I’m gay. I’m gay. I’m gay.”

“Jesus.” My father rolled his eyes. “Once more and you’ll summon a drag queen, mijo.”

My mother had to put a hand over her mouth to stifle a laugh.

“That’s it?” I demanded. “That’s all you have for me?”

“What do you want us to say?” My mom pulled her hand away from her mouth and did her best not to smile. “You said you’re gay. We heard you.”

“I’m heterosexual. So’s your mom.” My dad shrugged.

“Hey!” My mom interjected. “I kissed a girl or two in college. I’m cool.”

“Yes, mi amor.” Dad chuckled. “You’re super cool.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Eres gay.” My dad shrugged. “A nadie le importa.”

“Bueno.” I gave him an “ok” sign with my hand and grabbed the bag off of the table.

I hadn’t even gotten a step before the two of them stopped me.

“Oh, calm down.” My father rolled his eyes.

“Honey, come sit down.” My mom grabbed my forearm as I started to walk by her. “There’s no reason to get upset over nothing. Just sit down and talk to us about this.”

“About what?” My dad was in rare form. “I mean, Dios mio, the boy’s gay. El cielo es azul y la hierba es verde. These are things we know.”

My mom silenced him with a look, still holding onto my forearm.

“No puedes actuar normal?” I snapped at him. “Jesucristo, padre.”

“Just sit down.” My mother tugged at my arm.

“I have to take this up to Eli.”

“It can wait.” She stated firmly. “You sit down here and you both stop speaking Spanish to each other. English only—so I know if you’re fighting or teasing or…whatever.”

“No lo sé…” My dad began as I fell into the chair across from them, then saw the look on my mother’s face, “I don’t know why this is such a big deal. I mean, he had a picture of One Direction on his wall when he was ten years old. I called it then and I’m calling it now, él es un homosexual.”

“Dilo en inglés!” I jabbed a finger at him.
