Chapter Five

Apparently, Alayna thought, she wasn’t moving fast enough to suit them. A group of women in, she thought, her age range approached her and began pulling at her clothing until they’d undressed her and then they lifted her up and carried her to the pool. More than half expecting them to toss her or dunk her, she was surprised again when they merely stood her on her feet. The older women who’d joined the group moved in then and began to scrub her within an inch of her life.

She knew damned well she didn’t stink and she was damned if she could figure out what all the scrubbing was about but, thankfully, it didn’t take them long to be completely satisfied.

Then they dunked her.

When she’d come up for the second time, they were apparently satisfied that they’d thoroughly washed and rinsed her and they escorted her out.

That was when she discovered they weren’t done with her.

They dragged her down onto a blanket on the ground and proceeded to smear some kind of sticky shit all over her—or so it seemed—arms and legs up to the pits and crotch.

Then she discovered she was getting a full body ‘wax’, because as soon as it hardened they proceeded to rip it off and the hair with it.

She strongly suspected they drew blood, but when they’d finished trying to peel her alive, they carried her back into the water and scrubbed her again.

As ritual-like as the torture session seemed, it didn’t occur to Alayna until she was carried out the second time that there might be an objective beyond the torture.

That occurred to her, though, when they patted her dry and then began to dress her in native clothing that was only similar to what they were wearing. This was far more elaborate, made of finer leather, embroidered with colorful threads and beads.

She saw when they’d finally satisfied themselves with her appearance that there was some sort of platform rather like a primitive carrier for invalids except it had an enclosed box on top. When they’d helped her inside, she discovered it was like a … well coffin, as far as she was concerned except the sides were some sort of fluttering, sheer curtains. Still, there was barely enough room to sit up and once the women picked up the poles and lifted the thing she found she couldn’t maintain her balance. She sprawled out and then just held on as they bounced and jogged her back to the village.

She heard the sound of drums before they’d gone far at all and felt her pulse take on the same rhythm.

Try as she might not to think about the vague tales she remembered about ritual sacrifices, she couldn’t put it from her mind.

She supposed it should have been some comfort that they’d gone to all the trouble to clean her up and dress her in fancy clothing, but it wasn’t.

Because she remembered that the objective, in general, was to make an offering to their gods and they wanted the ‘present’ to look its best to please the gods.
