Chapter 14

Goreg

Oh, fuck. What was she going to do?

I wanted to know.

Once I’d climbed under the covers, I’d keep my hands to myself. My legs and . . . everything else would remain on my side of the bed despite my urge to gather her into my arms and hold her.

That would be dangerous.

Forbidden.

But very tempting.

I untied the knot in the curtain and tugged it off my body, tossing it into the corner of the room. My cock spiked upward as if it thought action loomed in its future. It would be disappointed tonight.

After giving her plenty of time to decide what she was going to do and get into bed naked or dressed, I shut the light off and left the room. I crossed over to my side and lifted the covers, sliding beneath them.

Lying on my back, I stared at the ceiling.

Violet breathed.

Time ticked along.

Violet continued to breathe.

The moon slowly rose, shedding light across the room. I rolled onto my side, staring out the window at the big maple tree outside. Fall’s colorful leaves had dropped, leaving only bare branches behind. Soon, they’d be dusted with snow. This would be my second winter here. I’d moved to the town a year after monsters stepped into human view. I liked it here. I could see myself settling into a home and starting a family.

I’d love it if Violet fit into that picture.

In my dream world, we fixed up the B&B and opened the second-floor rooms to both humans and monsters. We’d renovate the third level to make it perfect for our young, and it wasn’t hard to picture her holding our baby, smiling down at his or her dusky face and giggling as she teased the infant’s delicate wings.

Maybe Violet didn’t want to have children who looked like gargoyles. But they might be wingless and smooth skinned. Human-appearing. Genetics dictated and there was no saying they’d look like me.

I’d only watched from afar as humans went through their traditions. Christmas was coming up. Would I still be here to share that with Violet?

I could cut down a tree and drag it inside. We could decorate it together. I’d do my best to fit in with the human life she probably wanted.

“Are you awake?” she whispered.

“Yes.”

“I don’t know why, but I sense you’re sad.”

“How can I be sad? I got married today.” My forced laugh didn’t come out as merry as I’d like.

She inched closer, the heat of her body teasing mine.

“Are you wearing anything?” I asked.

“No. Are you?”

“No.”

My cock decided there was a party going on and started to poke its head up, ready to rumble. Thankfully, Violet couldn’t see it in the dark.

“I have an odd request,” she said.

“Anything,” I breathed.

“Would you . . .” She sighed. “It’s stupid and it goes well beyond our friendship. I shouldn’t even be asking.”

“Speak, Violet.”

“Would you make love to me?”
