Chapter Twelve

“I am glowing?” Aideen laughed softly, thinking Lucien was in jest until she opened her eyes and saw herself surrounded by a golden light. She had no time to comment on it before the floor suddenly opened up beneath her feet, and she fell into a vast unknown. “Lucien!”

Fortunately, she’d had her arms outstretched, and he was already reaching for her. He was able to grab her just as they were roughly hurled through the portal.

She heard him curse the Stone of Draloch and then begin to argue with it. You could have given me warning. Where are you taking us now? If you hurt Aideen, I will grind you to dust.

Suddenly, she realized he had not been speaking the words aloud. Was it possible she could now read Lucien’s thoughts?

No!

She did not want to know what went on in this Dragon Lord’s mind. Although he had treated her better than anyone ever had in her life, she knew he was not a good man. Dear heaven. He was not even a man.

She was not certain what sort of being he was.

He had referred to himself as one of the fallen angels. There was nothing angelic about him now. He was big and brutally handsome, unforgiving to those who crossed him. Merciless to those who sought to destroy him…well, not that she could blame him for that. In a world where the rule of law was kill or be killed, one had to be fierce to survive.

What would he do to those who sought to harm him?

What would he do if she—

No! She would never harm him.

She would fight to protect him. She had healed his broken arm, and now she had made a room glow. Although not a warrior, she hoped to explore this strength within her.

Yes, fight to protect him.

Never hurt him.

Pain shot into her brow.

“Aideen, do not be frightened. Hold onto me. You are safe with me.”

“I know.” She hugged him tightly.

“It is almost over.” He drew her closer, holding her as though she were something precious. “We are almost through the worst of it.”

If Brihann and Lucien’s father meant to destroy him, then she would be caught up in the ensuing battles, would she not?

He had worried about this himself.

At some point, he would try to send her to safety because she was his dragon mate, and he would do all in his power to protect her. She could do no less for him.

She glanced at her arms once more and felt a surge of disappointment. She was no longer glowing.

If they were returning to the Fae Great Hall, she would seek out Queen Melody and ask her to teach her more about these powers. It was also important to find out why she had been glowing. Was this the first sign of her strength? Or had she merely been a conduit for Queen Melody?

She did not like to think of herself as the tallow candle whose only purpose was to hold another’s light.

They had not drifted through the celestial expanse very long before a door opened in front of them.
