Michael listened closely to the voices of the two men. He wanted to make sure he remembered them so he would have no problem identifying them later. Things went silent. With each passing second, Alarm grew in the pit of his stomach. He was certain that they were trying to sneak up on them.

This wouldn’t be such a bad situation if he were out here on his own. He might’ve actually met the killers head on and tried to incapacitate them for an arrest. But he wasn’t out here alone. The slender figure in his arms hadn’t stopped trembling for several minutes. It was a little chilly out here, but he knew it was mostly because she was terrified.

Wishing he knew how to make her feel safe, he slowly rubbed her arm in a comforting gesture. Her breathing started to slow. Eventually, the headlights that had lit up most of the field turned and disappeared. The killers were gone. Or at least he hoped they were.

Jess buried her face in his chest, letting out the sobs that made her body shake harder.

“It’s alright. I wouldn’t have let anything happen to you. But we should still keep our voices down,” he whispered.

“You think they’re still out here? We saw them drive off.” Jess shivered and wiped her tears with the back of her sleeve.

“One of them could have pretended to drive away and turned off their car just to fish us out. Follow me and be extremely quiet.” He held tightly onto her hand and pulled her back in the direction of his pickup.

It was taking a huge chance that this wasn’t a trick, but he needed to get Jess to a safer place. Guilt burned in his chest. Tom was right. If only he’d listened and taken Jess straight to the cabin. The possibility of someone seeing her near what could be the killer’s house was even higher now than before. He’d broken yet another promise to her.

Michael let out a sigh of relief when they walked through the door of the cabin, but he wouldn’t fully let down his guard. He would have to make a quick sweep of the house to make sure no one was there waiting for them. The front door led into a small open living room that was connected to the kitchen. There was one bedroom and a short sofa. He gave a silent groan. By the looks of the tiny couch, he wasn’t going to get much sleep while they were out here. Jess followed him throughout the house as he looked behind doors and checked to make sure windows were locked.

He flipped the light on in the bedroom, took a quick scan of the room, checked the closet, then turned the light back off.

“Actually, can you leave that on?” Her voice had a quiver to it.

“Uh, sure. But stay away from the windows. I’m not taking any more chances,” he said.

Michael placed the emergency duffel bag he kept in his car on the floor.
