Chapter Eleven

Burn Baby Burn was a smaller gym located close to downtown. When I was a kid, the building housed an appliance store that must’ve closed after I moved away.

I stopped at the counter and showed my badge to the short man to gain admittance.

“I’m the owner,” he said. “Anything you need to know from me?”

“Where can I find the Full Body and Booty class that starts at eleven?”

His expression crumpled. “Ooh, that got cancelled last minute. Pedro came down with a stomach bug.”

I contemplated the gym. Anyone who showed up for the class would likely still be here. If you got dressed for the gym and drove all the way here, you’d make the most of it.

“I think I’ll take a look around, if you don’t mind.”

“Be my guest. Because you are.” He cleared his throat. “My guest, that is.”

I ignored the awkward exchange and embarked on a tour of the gym. At the back of the building, I found the weights room that Alison mentioned. There was no one around, so I took advantage of the solitude and darted forward. It had been ages since I lifted actual weights, probably not since my days with the FBI when I was trying to fit in and pass for human.

I lifted a set of barbells over my head and smiled triumphantly. Maybe I should consider a home gym. I spent a lot of time outside training with Neville, but that was mostly how to defeat demons and other special maneuvers. I was so deep in thought that I failed to notice the muscular man in a white tank top and shorts wandering over to stare at me.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Did I cut ahead of you?”

He looked at me, bug-eyed. “No, I was just wondering how long you’ve been lifting.”

I lowered the barbells to the floor. “Why do you ask?”

“Because I haven’t been able to lift that one. It’s like my white whale.”

Oops. “Well, I’m an FBI agent. I’ve done a lot of physical training for my job.”

He whistled. “Wow. I would never guess how strong you are by looking at you.”

I dusted off my hands and smiled. “That’s why you should never judge a book by its cover.”

He gazed at me with a dazed expression. “Guess not.”

I hurried away before he told anyone else about the weights. I’d have to be more careful next time. I exited the weights room in search of Gloria. My gaze swept the next room and I spotted a middle-aged brunette talking to a younger woman. I ambled over to eavesdrop on the conversation.

“You should try the chicken salad,” the brunette was saying. “They use almonds instead of walnuts and it’s amazing.”

“Excuse me,” I said. “I hate to interrupt, but I was hoping to check out the Full Body Booty class or something?”

The brunette offered a friendly smile. “Normally it’s now, but the instructor is out sick and they couldn’t get a replacement fast enough.”

“Listen to Gloria,” the younger woman said. “She knows everything going on around here.
