There are many excellent websites and cookbooks tailored to different food preferences that give tips on how to prepare foods; we provide links to some of these as well as more ideas on using food to maintain energy and mental clarity amid a busy life at http://www.kristenallott.com/blog.

Eating Well at Work

Maintaining energy and mental clarity and reducing anxiety do take some planning, particularly for meals at work. Most people, when they do it, report feeling better. Here are some suggestions to make this possible.

Make extra dinner, or cook enough over the weekend to have leftovers for a few lunches.

Get the right containers—for example, glass containers that can easily be microwaved—and a fun lunch bag. Having something to bring food to work in is key. Getting something that you like the look and functionality of will make it more enjoyable to use.

Make a list of restaurants, delis, and corner shops near where you work. Get or print out menus and circle the healthy choices that are in line with your dietary goals. Having these preselected helps reduce “impulse ordering.”

Keep backup emergency snacks in a drawer: protein bars with enough protein so they can be meal replacements in a pinch, a jar of nut butter, bags of nuts and dried fruit, and dark chocolate bars are convenient to store at work.
