At the diner, the party crowd absorbed the largest table in the place. Georgie sat in the bend of the curved booth. He gave me a thoughtful nod when my glance skimmed his area. I gulped.

Mary and James sat at the opposite side of the restaurant. James waved me over. Mary smiled but did not meet my eyes. This was going to be an uncomfortable meal.

“Penny,” James said. His voice was steady and happy, just as it had been earlier in the day. Perhaps slightly more sleepy but not a smidgen less peppy. “Sit down. We’re glad to have you. What did you think of the guest room Mary made out of the mudroom?”

“I love it,” I said, meaning it.

Mary broke her concentrated avoidance of me and glanced up. Her eyes were masks of their early morning hospitable selves. “Sit by me, Penny.” Her voice hadn’t lost any of its happy cadence as she patted the vinyl next to her.

I slid into the seat, a bundle of nerves and nausea. “We’ve already put the order in but you’ll need to tell Harvey what you’d like to drink when he comes by,” Mary added, shifting her weight a little further away from me.

“No need,” James said. “I’ll tell him. I need to wash up anyway.”

He rose, leaving me alone in the booth with Mary.

“Iced Tea, I guess,” I said. “Thanks.”

“Good enough,” James confirmed before walking away.

I took a deep inhale as if the air could give me more courage or common sense. I spun to face Mary, only to see her sapphire eyes hazing with tears.

“It’s not what you think,” she whispered swiftly.

“Huh?”

“I mean, I guess it is what you think, if you think Georgie and I are in love. We are. But I’m not ditching my dad on a whim, not really. Though it feels like it. No. Georgie and I met a year ago, when he passed through town. We’ve been exchanging letters ever since.”

I was slapped senseless at the sudden info-dump. “Okay?” I whispered back.

Mary must’ve mistook my confusion for judgement. She quickly filled in the blanks of her story. “Dad doesn’t know. I’m going to tell him, right after dinner. That is, if you don’t tell him first. Please don’t tell him, Penny. Please, he’ll be heartbroken. It’s just been him and me since mom left. We’ve made this motel our home for as long as I can remember. He’s going to flip if he finds out about Georgie and me before I can break it to him. We’re leaving, once the snow clears.”

I blinked, hard. I really wasn’t going to get flogged for spying? “It’s none of my business,” I said, mostly to myself. Besides, the ravens in the snow gave the love birds less than 16 hours to live. Hopefully, they made the most of it.

Mary wiped her eyes. Smiled and frowned and smiled some more. “He’s coming,” she whispered before turning away and taking a sip of soda.

James scooted into his seat, just as
