Playwright Irish Pub Bono came here once when U2 was in town, not because it’s so authentic, but because the TV sets over the bar were showing some European soccer (sorry, “football”) match and it serves pints of Guinness. A great pre- or post-club spot, it’s also one of the few SoBe bars that features live music from time to time. 1265 Washington Ave., South Beach. www.PlaywrightIrishPub.com. 305/534-0667.
Purdy Lounge Over in the mostly locals neighborhood Sunset Harbor, no-nonsense Purdy is not unlike your best friend’s basement, featuring a pool table and a slew of board games such as Operation to keep the attention-deficit-disordered from tuning out. The cocktails are relatively cheap, there’s no cover, no DJ, and no attitude. On weekends, though, there can be a line, so be prepared. Saturday night has become the preferred night for locals, and weekday happy hour draws a young professional crowd on the prowl. 1811 Purdy Ave., South Beach. www.PurdyLounge.com. 305/531-4622.
The Room It’s beer and wine only at this South of Fifth hideaway, where locals come to get away from the insanity just a few blocks up. The beer selection is comprehensive, with brews from across the planet. The wine maybe not so much, but there’s no whining here at this tiny, industrial-style, candlelit spot. 100 Collins Ave., South Beach. www.TheOtheRoom.com. 305/531-6061.
Rose Bar at the Delano If every rose has its thorns, the ones at this painfully chic lobby bar are the painfully high cocktail prices ($17). The crowd’s dominated by poseurs and self-styled glitterati who view life through rose-colored glasses (Italian-made, of course). 1685 Collins Ave., South Beach. www.Delano-Hotel.com. 305/674-5752.
Segafredo Espresso Although actually a cafe, Segafredo’s become an integral part of SoBe nightlife especially as command central for Euros who miss their cafe society. Euro lounge music, tons of outdoor tables on a prime corner of Lincoln Road, and an always-hopping scene make ’Fredo one of my favorite nocturnal haunts (and not too shabby daytimes, either). Although South Beach has l’originale, there’s another location in downtown’s Brickell area at 1421 S. Miami Ave. 1040 Lincoln Rd., South Beach. www.SZE-Originale.com. 305/673-0047.
Swankest hotel bars
Long gone are the days of the old-school Holiday Inn lounges. In fact, some hotels seem to spend more money on their bars than they do on their bedding. That aside, hotel bar-hopping is pretty popular in Miami. The fabulous W South Beach has several watering holes, from the Living Room lobby bar and poolside Wet Bar to the bar in the star-studded Mr Chow restaurant. Here’s our list of the rest of the best:
Rose Bar at the Delano (above): For seeing and being seen.
Skybar at the Shore Club (below): Also for seeing and being seen.
Mondrian (above): Picture Alice in Wonderland going through the wrong mouse hole and ending up in South Beach. Trippy.
Martini Bar at the Raleigh Hotel ( 305/534-6300): A true throwback to the days of Deco set to the tunes of Edith Piaf, Tony Bennett, Sinatra, and more. On Tuesdays there are guest mixologists and “curated” martini showcases.
Fifty Miami at the Viceroy (p.
