Being Israeli Jewish in Russia and the CIS: Intermediate Summary
The Meaning of Jewishness
Answering the question of what it means to be Jewish in 2019, respondents had to choose no more than 3â4 parameters on a 14-point alternative scale. In 11 cases, these parameters ranked identical in the scale of priorities for both Jews with no Israeli ID and for immigrants from Israel. Both placed ethnocultural values ââassociated with national self-identity in the first three places: âa sense of belonging to the peopleâ, âpride in Jewish culture,â and âthe need to keep Jewish traditions, customs and cultureâ. Even more significantly, the weight of the first two of these parameters (for Israeli emigrants significantly higher than for local Jews) was observed in centers of the highest concentration of Israelis, cosmopolitan megacities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, plus in Ukraine where remains of the traditional culture of the Ashkenazi Jewry are more visible than in Russia.34
