* From an undated, unrevised typescript corrected in the light of the two notebooks on which the text of the typescript is based. The notebooks seem not to be earlier than the 1970s.

† The person who produced the typescript version of the text was baffled by the author’s handwriting at this point and simply left a gap. The word ‘arise’, odd though it is, is the best shot at decipherment of the notebook text that the present editor can manage.

‡ The discussion of Hume ends half way through the second notebook referred to in the first editorial footnote. The remainder of that notebook is taken up with Anscombe’s own analysis of beliefs about the past. There are directions in her handwriting that the typescript about Hume should end where the present text ends.
