Later on that evening, I walk into McLean’s Boathouse and sit at a high top table waiting for my friends, Jackie, Nicole, and Keisha. We are the only four black women that work at the breast center. Jackie and Keisha are mammo techs and Nicole is a registration rep there. Lorr is running late. She let me know earlier today that her mom wants her to look at a house with her, her sister, and her husband. She rolled her eyes as she told me. I check my phone….damn! We’re supposed to meet at 7 and now it’s 7:30…….these heffas are always running on CP time!

It’s 7:45 and they finally show up. Jackie is the first one to greet me.

“Hey girl! Sorry I’m late…….Andrew’s babysitter was running late again.”

“Jackie……..why can’t you just get a new babysitter?”

“Look…..she’s been watching my Andrew for a long time and……she really helped me get through my divorce with asshole Tyrone! I can’t just fire her!”

“Point taken.”

I turned to Nicole and Keisha.

“Hey ladies!”

Nicole gives me a hug.

“Always nice to see you Mo.”

Keisha runs over and gives me a kiss on the cheek then she says, “C’mon y’all lets get some damn drinks! I sure need one!”

After we have our drinks in hand we begin to spill the shit. Keisha goes first.

“So Jackie…..why won’t you go first.”

“Why do I have to always go first?”

“Because you’re the one who came out of a fucked up marriage…..way more interesting than my life!”

“Okay bitch!”

We laugh and then she starts.

“So Tyrone called me today……guess what he said?”

We all stare at her and Keisha jumps in, “Girl what did the asshole say?”

Jackie takes a big ass sip of her red wine, “That motherfucker asked me if Brandon could go to the all-white Prim Pount Academy private school up in Short Mountain!”

Nicole almost spit her drink out, “What?!”

Keisha sucked her teeth, “Oh hell no!”

I almost jumped in my chair, “What the fuck does he want to do that for? Don’t you live in Montclue……..which has a great school district? Not to mention it’s diverse!”

“That’s what I said to him.”

I continue, “And what did he say?”

“He said that Heather…….thought it would be a good idea for him to expand his horizons a little bit.”

Nicole jumps in, “You mean expanding into white horizons.”

“Girl that’s exactly what I told him. Look Andrew has both black and white friends and that’s great. But……the last thing I need to happen is him forgetting that he’s black or even worse…….being embarrassed that he’s black. I went to an all white school and it was hell. I’m not doin the same thing to my baby. Not fuckin happening! If I gotta take his black ass to court about this shit I will! It’s bad enough that he fuckin cheated on me with a young Ms. Thang. It’s even worse that he did it with Ms. Blonde Hair Blue Eyes Bitch. I mean black women are told everyday that we are ugly as it is! My mom never paid attention to me because I was the darkest of my two siblings and now…….
