CHAPTER EIGHT

IT HAD BEEN two days and thirteen hours since she had walked out of Trent’s home. She had been waiting for him to contact her. She’d believed him when he’d said he wasn’t involved with his father’s plans, but she knew there was something going on between him and his father that he was holding back from her. There was a bitterness in Trent’s voice whenever he spoke of his father that was inconsistent with everything else she thought she knew about him.

She decided to stop by Labor and Delivery after rounding on her patients on the recovery floor, hoping not only to see him, but also to talk to the charge nurse about the gossip Amanda had heard earlier that week, concerning her and Trent. She needed to address some of the tongue-wagging that was going around the hospital. She could have approached the people she thought were spreading the stories around, but she felt it would be better to have the charge nurse remind them to watch what they were saying.

Arriving on the unit, she found the nurses’ station empty, which was never a good sign. Recognizing the flashing emergency light that was going off over Labor Room Five, she sprinted down the hall.

“Lana, we need some help,” said Laurie, who was the day charge, as soon as she saw Lana enter the room.

Lana recognized the two nurses who were trying to strip the clothes off a pale woman whose rounded belly indicated that she was due at any time.

“What do you need me to do?” Lana offered as she approached the bed.

The metallic smell hit her before she saw the blood that pooled between the patient’s legs. The young woman looked to be of Asian descent and she seemed to be pleading in a language that Lana couldn’t understand.

“What’s she saying?” she asked as she grabbed the heart monitor and applied it to the swollen belly.

“Save my baby,” said the man standing at the other side of the bed, holding her hand. “She doesn’t want to lose our baby.”

Lana touched the woman’s abdomen and felt the hard tone of the uterus. Looking further down, she saw the outline of a faded scar. “Did she have surgery when she had another baby?” she asked the man.

“Yes—with our three sons. She was supposed to have another C-section.”

“Ruptured uterus?” Laurie asked as she passed her a small hand-held ultrasound.

“No, I think her placenta is abrupting,” Lana said as she looked at the black and white screen.

The labor monitors started to beep and the fetal heartbeat began tracing across the screen. It was lower than normal, but if they got the baby out fast it would have a chance.

The blood pressure machine went off too, and the cuff on one of the patient’s arms began to tighten.

“Who’s the doctor on call?” Lana asked as they worked to turn the patient and remove the rest of her clothes.

“Dr. Bradley and he’s on his way,” Laurie said. “We’ve already called the nursery and Dr.
