Experimental network data are classically analyzed with a mixed model, the parameters of which are generally estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method (Pinheiro and Bates 2000). It has been shown that inferences based on the REML method are valid for missing data of the MCAR and MAR types (Piepho and Möhring 2006). Missing data of the MNAR type are more difficult to handle, because, in this case, the missing data are considered to be informative. The analysis thus requires a particular approach involving the modeling of the origin of the missing data.
