GETTING THE BODY ON BOARD

Often children with social anxiety, especially adolescents, hold tension in their bodies. Diaphragmatic breathing (Chapter 4) gives them an instant solution for the racing heart and other discomfort they feel around others. With regular practice, relaxation training (Chapter 4) allows them to support their breath, amplify their voice, and ameliorate tension in the upper body, face, and hands.

Tape recorders, video cameras, or even mirrors can be powerful tools in helping children to take charge of the social messages they send through their body language and tone of voice. They can use these devices to see what they look like when they smile and experiment playfully with creating different impressions—confident, serious, worried—noticing what it feels like in their muscles. Participating in activities like the martial arts, yoga, drama, or dance are fun ways to help kids feel more confident in their bodies.
