MANY MILES WERE BETWEEN them and the village, and all Water Runs Fast could think about was making Sun Eyes his wife. They had traveled two nights and three days only sleeping for a few hours before moving on. Tonight, they had settled beside a small stream and made camp.
âWill we only eat pemmican and biscuits this whole trip?â Sun Eyes asked.
âUntil we are two more days away.â He handed her a tin cup with water. She had insisted they could drink from a cup and not his water pouch.
Her gaze met his. âYour mother and aunt said we should be cleansed by a sweat lodge before we come together as husband and wife. How can we do that while traveling?â
Was the talk about the sweat lodge a way to tell him she was still not ready to become his wife? He would answer her directly and see if she persisted it was necessary. âThis is true if we were at the village.â
She watched her hands, holding the cup. âWould washinâ in the stream be the same?â
His body tightened at the thought of running his hands all over her. âWe would be cleansed.â Theyâd talked while riding side by side. Sheâd told him how sheâd only felt pain at the touch of the man sheâd wed and she wasnât sure sheâd be able to become Water Runs Fastâs wife.
Heâd promised they would go slow and if anything hurt, he would stop and they could wait.
Her gaze raised to his face. âI would like to cleanse in the stream and lay with you tonight.â She stood, spread their blankets one on top of the other on a grassy spot beside their belongings, and then undressed.
Water Runs Fast was pleased to see she wore nothing under the dress. She came to him in the way an Absarokee woman would. Before he could blink, she walked to the stream and stepped in, sucking in air at the coldness of the water.
He shoved the biscuit in his mouth and chewed as he untied his leggings and breach cloth and walked naked to the stream.
While heâd seen her body unclothed many times, this would be the first time her gaze saw all of him. He knew he was a strong man and that a woman wanted a strong man to protect her and her children.
Sun Eyes was bent at the waist splashing water on her body, with her head toward the middle of the stream.
He walked up behind her and put his hands on her hips. She shot upright and spun in his arms. Their bare bodies touched for the first time and her eyes widened. While her body shook from the cold, he was used to it. Since he was small his mornings started with a dip in the nearest stream, snow or no snow. The icy water made the Absarokee men strong.
Her cold hands grasped his upper arms as her breasts pressed against his chest. They were so firm, yet soft. Her nipples were hard nubs.
