CHAPTER 15

Fifteen

The ride back to town felt like it took even longer. I couldn’t help being disappointed with the lack of information from Cordelia. I asked a few questions during the ride — mostly regarding the sirens’ desire to be kept separate — but there was little to discuss.

“We’ll have a barbecue at the lighthouse for everyone,” Galen said when the town popped into view. “Gather your people and bring them. We’ll serve food in about two hours.”

I didn’t find myself rankled by what clearly was an order. “What good will that do?” I asked.

“We need to start working this out. Your lamia seems to have the most information.”

“You’ve met Raven,” I reminded him. “Does she strike you as purposely helpful?”

“She strikes me as loyal. In fact, she reminds me of Aurora. In a time of crisis, she’ll put herself on the line for those she cares about.”

“You’re assuming she cares about us.”

Galen grimaced as he stopped on the road near the fairgrounds. I saw my people working. Several of them — including Kade and Luke — lifted their heads to stare at the truck. It was almost as if they sensed us. “Your lamia might be abrasive, but she’s a team player. If she wasn’t, given how frightened she is after seeing those runes, she’d already be gone.”

“I guess you’re a better judge of people than I gave you credit for.” I flashed a small grin as I pushed open the door. “We’ll be there for dinner. Thank you for the invitation, even though it sounded more like an order.”

“He’s just bossy,” Hadley said. “Do you guys have any special food requests? Any vegetarians?”

“None who will be with us. I’ll just bring our core group. Nixie, Naida, Nellie, Dolph, Luke, Cole, Kade, Raven and Percival should do it. I’ll try to round up Max, but he’s likely otherwise engaged.”

“Max is the owner?” Galen asked. “I believe I saw his name on the paperwork when the request came through the DDA.”

“He’s the owner, but he has little to do with day-to-day operations now. That falls mainly to me.”

“See if you can get him. We’ll have a big spread for dinner. Then we’ll talk.”

I moved to shut the door and then paused, my gaze shifting to Brody. “You’ll be there? I have more shark shifter questions.”

“What is it with you guys and the questions?” Brody threw his hands into the air.

“He’ll be there,” Hadley promised. “We can double-team him with the questions.”

I was still smiling when I joined my group. I was tired but rest was still hours away. “We’re invited to dinner,” I told Kade. “Things have changed.”

“Like being attacked by a tribe of kids and hiding in a cave?” Kade demanded. “You can’t just leave after announcing you’ve been attacked. I need to see that you’re okay with my own eyes.”

“I told you I was fine.”

“Yes, well … seeing and hearing are two different things.”

“Whatever.” I wasn’t in the mood to argue. “I’m fine. A shark shifter saved us. He’ll be at dinner.
