The Next Evening…

Oaklyn led me and Finn down the red carpet, stopping us in front of several news outlets. I hated doing press, but Frisco was adamant about the MC being more social. All those stupid ass outlets asked the same questions, over and over again, in different ways, and some of them loved to try to catch people slipping.

“Last one, right here,” Oaklyn whispered.

“Hey, Foxx and Finn, it’s Amberly with Black Arkville News. Y’all are looking so sharp tonight. Yaass. How important is an event like the one tonight to you? I know that you run a corporation full of Black men. What type of mental health protocols do you have in place for them?”

I hated this stupid ass news outlet. They were always posting stupid ass shit, but here, with a mental health press pass.

“An event like tonight is very important because a lot of Black men have a lot of misconceptions about mental health and if we want other people to take it serious, then we have to start taking it serious ourselves, and—”

Loud and thunderous yells broke out. Cameras clicked and flashed a mile a minute.

Amyris!

Amyris over here!

Amyris to your left!

Right here. Yes. Amyris!

Through the swarm of people, I could see Amyris working the cameras like she was born for it. She and I locked eyes for less than a second, but she never broke character, like I was. I was very stunned by her beauty, as everyone else was. Ivo stood off to the side of her with his hands shoved in his pocket, with a devious smile on his face. I was repulsed by the fact that we were both wearing Sebastian Cruz.

“What an entrance,” I said, focusing back on the interviewer. “What was the second question?”

“Your corporation’s mental health—”

“Oh, yes. Our corporation has the perfect employee wellness program, which includes flexible working hours, remote work, a lot of team-building exercises, and other things of that nature.”

“So—”

“We have to get inside now, thank you,” Oaklyn cut in, smiling.

Oaklyn led us inside to our table, that was in the center of the room.

“What the hell was that?” Finn asked.

“What?”

“It took you almost a second too long to get back on track. How yo’ girl a better actor than you?”

“Chill.”

The server came and poured water in our glasses.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Amyris and Ivo make their way in. She looked so fucking beautiful in her black, shimmery, one-sleeved gown. It hugged her curves tastefully, with a split that stopped right above her knee. Her hair was pulled up and out of her face. The scar on her face was perfectly covered with makeup. When his publicist led them to their chairs, right across from us, my heart started to pump faster.

“Foxx, what’s up?” Ivo spoke, and I threw my head back, wanting to minimize any reaction he and I had. “Baby, you remember Foxx?”

Baby?

She smiled and nodded. “Hi. Foxx.”

She stretched her hand across the table and shook my hand.

“My brother, Finn,” I introduced him.
