CHAPTER NINE

‘I’M GLAD you agreed to have dinner with me.’ Jed escorted Aimee into a corner booth, sliding onto the worn vinyl bench seat opposite. ‘But Greasy Joe’s? What sort of food does this place serve?’

Aimee waved at several waiters she knew by name, picked up a menu and handed it to Jed. ‘The best, Mr Snobby Chef. Here, see for yourself. As for having dinner with you, it’s the only way I could keep you and Toby from ganging up on me any more.’

At the mention of Toby’s name, Jed’s eyes took on a gaga look she would never have thought possible. ‘He’s some kid.’

‘So you keep saying.’

Their gazes locked across the table, his a clear caramel, hers a confused hazel.

She didn’t want to do this—spend an evening sitting across from him, smiling, chatting and trying to act as if he didn’t affect her, when in reality her stomach churned with pent-up tension.

She’d fussed over her hair, her make-up and her outfit, something she hadn’t done in ages. Sure, she’d dated a bit, but somehow, going out to dinner with Jed made the act of simple decision-making far too complicated.

After way too much dithering, she’d opted for the natural look with her wayward curls, using a ton of anti-frizz serum to tame them, and a quick slick of cherry gloss over her lips and a mascara wand over her lashes. She wasn’t trying to impress him.

Oh, yeah? Then what’s with the killer outfit?

OK, so maybe she’d been a tad obsessive with the clothes thing, but hey, a girl had to have one weakness, right?

Unfortunately, he was looking straight at her, appreciation for her fitted pale pink dress clear from the subtle yet sexy glint in his eyes.

‘You know I only agreed to this dinner because you played dirty and I had no choice.’

If she’d thought her blunt talking would distract him long enough to stop him staring at her as if she were an entrée, she was wrong.

‘Just because Toby happened to think it’s a good idea I take you out for a break too doesn’t mean I didn’t play fair. You had a choice. You could’ve said no.’

And give up a chance to ask the hard questions she’d avoided the last few days since Toby had come home? No way.

She’d been fired up on several occasions, wanting to pin him down for Toby’s sake. He had every right to know if his father intended on being part of his life long-term and she’d do anything to make Toby’s recovery as smooth as possible.

Anything?

A vivid vision of getting up close and personal with Jed again flashed across her mind and she blinked, rapidly dispelling it. Maybe she needed to amend her good intentions to ‘anything within reason’.

‘I could’ve said no but there wouldn’t have been any fun in that. I intend to grill you and here is as good a place as any.’

The corners of his mouth twitched, drawing her unwitting attention to his lips and the host of memories they could elicit on their own, given half a chance.
