The next two weeks were a whirlwind of social activities, and Darcy found himself often thrown together with Lizzy, though she maintained aloof distance between them. If she had forgiven him for that kiss, it didn’t show. She was careful not to be alone with him, and as he spent more and more time trying to devise a way to get her alone, he realized how entangled his heart was becoming with Lizzy as well. As Charles was falling ever deeper in love with Jane, Darcy realized he was doing the same with Lizzy.

He had no idea how to get through to her or make her see his intentions though. When she would not even give him the time of day, how could he make any sort of heartfelt plea or ask to court her?

He might have been content to let things play out as they would, denying his feelings and hiding them from her to avoid encumbering himself with all the complications of the Bennet family and respecting her need for clear preference for distance from him, if he hadn’t seen her in Meryton that afternoon.

It wasn’t that she was in Meryton. Rather, it was the company she kept. She was with Mr. Wickham standing in front of the general store, and they were engaged in deep conversation. Much too close for his liking, and when Wickham put his hand on her lower back, Darcy stiffened.

He was on the verge of challenging Wickham to a duel right then when Kitty and Lydia emerged from the store, giggling and breaking up the interaction between Lizzy and Wickham. He stood watching from afar, ensuring Lizzy was safely in the company of her sisters and moving away from Wickham before allowing himself to return to Netherfield.

Riding Goliath got him to the house much faster than the Bennet sisters, who were due at Netherfield for tea that afternoon. When their carriage pulled up more than an hour later, he was waiting near the foyer, and he was relieved to see Lizzy was the last one to enter, preceded by Kitty and Lydia, who were giggling together, and then Jane, who moved with dignified sedateness. Mary followed along, her nose in a book, with Fanny just behind her.

There was a hint of hesitation in Lizzy’s step, and he had no doubt she was worried she would see him. It pained him to realize just how much she disliked him, but he didn’t let that deter him. He waited until they were almost in the sitting room for tea before he grasped Lizzy’s wrist and pulled her farther down the hall, urging her into the library and closing the door behind him before she could protest.

She scowled at him. “Mr. Darcy, what are you doing? Your behavior is appalling.”

“I must speak with you, Lizzy.”

Her eyes narrowed. “I did not give you leave to use my first name, Mr. Darcy.”

He winced at the lapse in manners and nodded abruptly. “I apologize, Miss Bennet, but this is important.
