CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

“What the hell is this?” Matt exclaimed, coming into the room just as Lottie was laying down the towels she had planned to be their pillows. His eyes were light with laughter and she saw the small crinkles bracketing his eyes as he regarded what she had made.

“It’s a blanket fort, made out of towels!” She pointed a finger at him. “I mean I did promise you one.”

“Ahhhh alongside daisy chains and matching tattoos. And there was me thinking you were joking.”

She placed a hand to her chest. “Oh no, I was deadly serious. Matching tattoos are booked for the end of the holiday and daisy chains will come when we’re back home.”

His mouth quivered as he tried not to laugh. “Course they are.” His eyes cut to hers and the affection in his gaze made her insides flood with warmth. She felt it rise up her neck and tickle her chin.

“I couldn’t resist.” She had found three cardboard boxes - one filled with shower gels, one conditioner and one shampoo. She had used them as weights, placing them on the benches facing one another before making a haphazard roof from the towels and attaching them to the clothes hooks. Then she had layered the floor with even more towels before putting more boxes filled with cleaning supplies at the end so it only had one entrance.

Matt walked around to stand beside her to fully look into it.

“And for a second there I thought we’d just each grab a couple of towels and sleep on the benches.”

“That would be painful and boring.”

“This is the kind of fort I dreamed of as a kid.”

“Well-,” she shoved him in the side playfully. “-tonight’s your lucky night. Come on, get in. I’ll grab the lights. Did you manage to fix the door?”

Matt had tried to make the front door more secure as she had set up their sleeping arrangement. He’d broken the lock when he’d kicked it so it had kept swinging open. “Managed to make sure it would hold against the wind. But if it gets any stormier out there I may have to find a tool box and drill it shut.”

She pulled a face. “That won’t look creepy at all when someone comes to find us.”

A chuckle played across his lips.

“Right,” Lottie said, “I’m going to use the toilet and then I’ll turn off the light. You settle down.”

He nodded once, his eyes still observing the tent with a ghost of a smile behind his expression.

The only light switch in the entire place was right by the front door and when she switched it off, the hum of the heater died too. She swallowed, flicking it on again just to make sure.

“You okay?” Matt called.

“Yeah, just the heating goes off if I turn the light off.”

He popped his head out of the open door to the changing room. “Well it’s up to you. You were the one who jumped in the freezing cold lake. How are you feeling?”

“Bit dizzy. Bit cold.
