Chapter Twelve

“So the day walkers are still sensitive to sunlight?”

Dylan couldn’t believe someone was stupid enough to ask the question. Hadn’t they learned anything about vampires and half-breeds prior to attending boot camp? He was in one of his early morning classrooms, on day fourteen of his boot camp. So far, there’d been no big surprises. His favorite part so far had been demonstrating his acumen with the crossbow. He was one of the most accurate marksmen in his class.

“It varies,” the instructor answered. Sue was in her early thirties, attractive, with long black hair pulled into a pony tail. In her business suit, she appeared anything other than a vampire killer. “Some of the half-breeds blend into society seamlessly. They eat regular food, go to the beach, even sunbathe.”

That was fucked up, the idea of a vampire lying out in the sun.

“Why is this?” The teenage boy responded. “It seems like they’d all be the same.”

“Probably for the same reason there are variations in other species. Genetics, breeding. Who knows? My personal theory is that over time the aversion to sunlight diminishes in these half-human vampires. It’s like they develop immunity or something. This is why the oldest living day walkers are so hard to identify and exterminate.”

But it wasn’t just their tolerance of light that was altered over time. Their thirst for blood also diminished. The most blood thirsty vampire was the newly converted. Over the course of decades or centuries, the blood thirst lessened, and some of the oldest vampires could go for years without a drop of human blood.

“When a half-breed is born, they immediately begin feeding off human blood, usually that of the mother if she’s human. They’re raised in darkness, waking at night and sleeping all through the day. During early childhood and adolescence they age at a comparable pace to humans. Once they reach puberty, the aging process slows, and by the time they’re young adults, it all but stops. We estimate that the los luzes age approximately one year to every fifty of a human.”

Dylan resisted the urge to roll his eyes. This stuff was so rudimentary. He’d learned these basics by the time he started homeschooling. He also knew all about purebred vampires as well as werewolves and shapeshifters. This class was more like grade school than boot camp.

“Okay, enough of this boring stuff.” Sue went over to her desk and tossed her notes onto the blotter. “We still have forty minutes left in the period, so how about a field trip?”

Dylan heaved an audible sigh of relief.

“We’re going to head over to the other side of the compound to warehouse B7. Stick together as a group.” With that, she turned and marched briskly out the door before any of the students even had a chance to get up from their desks.

Thirty of the hundred sixteen cadets for this session of boot camp were in the same group. They had the exact same schedule with the same instructors and attended mandatory assemblies throughout the week.
