Savion walked into Sweet Temptations with one thing on his mind: the sugary deliciousness of one of Carmen’s key lime cheesecakes. Ever since the bakery had opened four months back, he’d been coming here once or twice a week to satisfy his sweet tooth. And while he occasionally indulged in one of owner Carmen Delacroix’s other treats, like double fudge cookies or maple peanut-butter blondies, the made-from-scratch key lime cheesecake was his absolute favorite way to treat himself after a stressful day.

Carmen, stationed on a stool behind the counter with an issue of Real Simple magazine in hand, looked up when he entered. “Hey, Savion. How are you, boo?”

He smiled back, knowing it was Carmen’s way to call everyone who entered her door by some endearment. “I’ll be doing a lot better once I get my cheesecake.” He made a beeline for the counter, peering into the glass case and letting his gaze sweep over her offerings. Seeing the single, generous slice of cheesecake sitting there, in front of a porcelain plate heaped with cookies, broadened his grin.

“You’re in luck. I’ve only got one slice of key lime left for the day.”

“Well, box it up for me, please.” He rubbed his hands together, his taste buds already anticipating the flavor of the rich dessert. “It’s been hell at work and I really need this pick-me-up.”

“You got it.” Carmen set aside her magazine and hopped down from the stool. As she turned to grab a box from the stack she kept on a shelf in the prep area, the bell over the door tinkled, indicating the entry of another customer.

He turned in time to see Jazmin stepping over the threshold. A group of four people entered behind her, but by the time the door swung shut again, she looked his way.

Their eyes met, and they silently assessed each other for a few moments. She wore a white button-down blouse with a pair of dark slacks that hugged the curves of her shapely hips. The silver belt circling her waist matched the buckle of the low-heeled loafers on her feet. Her hair was up in a bun on top of her head, but a few tendrils had fallen to frame her beautiful brown face.

Looking at her made it hard to think. He blinked a few times, trying to restart his brain.

“Hi, Savion.” Her soft-spoken words beckoned him back to reality.

“Hi, Jazmin. Nice to see you again.”

“Likewise.” She swallowed, her eyes darting to the display case. “Oh, good. There’s one left.” She moved toward the counter.

“I see you have a sweet tooth, too. Looks like we have that in common.”

She gave him a small, uncertain smile. “So we do.”

Carmen cleared her throat then. “I’ve gotta go to the back for a box. I’m out of the size I need for the cheesecake.” She started toward the kitchen. “Be right back.”

“Take your time.” He rested his elbow on the case, leaning on it and doing his best to look casual despite the way his heart raced whenever Jazmin was near.
