Five minutes ago, Charlotte had found herself spying out her bedroom at the cabin next door to hers. She was woman enough to admit she’d been ogling the hottie in the fitted jeans, boots and skintight long-sleeve white shirt. Had she realized it was her former RA at Florida A&M University, though, she might not have looked so hard.

A hurricane had flooded the boys’ dorm the summer before Charlotte’s freshman year, and so the school had scrambled to create living spaces for everyone. Richard Swayne had been the RA in the new coed dorm and kept law and order. All the girls on her floor had a crush on him. Not like she blamed him. Richard’s reddish-brown hair, green eyes and six-foot-five height caught everyone’s attention. Time had only made him finer.

“Richard Swayne, really?”

Richard took a step backward and crossed his muscular arms over his chest. “Well, damn,” he sighed.

The last time Charlotte had remembered having a heart-to-heart talk with him was when he called her into his office and tried to talk her out of leaving college. How dumb had she been back then?

“So, you are a Swayne,” Charlotte had said the first time she asked him if he belonged to the famous family in Southwood. The red hair was a dead giveaway, but Richard had kept her at bay back then. But it wasn’t their first encounter that stuck with her most. The painful memory of their last interaction came back so clearly. No one had ever rejected her with such a disappointed look before. Richard had been the first person she admitted to about leaving school when he called her into his office to confront her about the rumors. When he’d brought her into his office to try to talk her out of dropping out, she’d rebelled against him and his examples of instances when Denny scammed other students. Her friends and roommates had tried to point out Denny’s wandering eye. She’d rebelled against everyone, determined to prove to the world that her then boyfriend, Denny O’Malley, was not the evil mastermind everyone thought he was. Pushing the memories aside, she inhaled deeply and fought against the heated shame threatening to attack her cheeks.

“I never said I wasn’t from the Swayne family,” Richard said now. “I just didn’t appreciate the way you looked down on me for coming from a farming family.”

Gaping, Charlotte clutched her chest in genuine surprise. “I think we’re remembering things different.”

“No, we aren’t,” he replied with the same dismissive look on his handsome face.

“Correct me if I’m wrong,” Charlotte began, “but you were the one who approached me after that three-on-three basketball game.”

“The one where you were giving me the look?” Richard raised his left brow. “The one where only everyone twenty-one and over was allowed to attend?”

Like an age limit was going to stop me back then, she thought with a devilish chuckle. Charlotte had used her cousin’s ID in order to get into the club. She didn’t attend just to drink; Charlotte had always desired to be in the know on everything.
