Alcohol and tobacco are the two great military drugs. During World War II the U.S. Army provided cigarettes in K-rations, but discouraged hard liquor among troops on duty. What happened unofficially was another matter. The 31st Infantry Division, a mostly southern outfit, included veteran moonshiners, some of whom appear here on Morotai Island.
